Let’s Get Started, Here’s to 2025!!
1. Teaching Younger Students After Coming Back from the Holiday Break…
Coming back from the holiday break can be exciting and a bit chaotic for younger students. Start by easing them in with fun, low-pressure activities like dance games or review exercises to reawaken their skills. Reestablish routines ASAP—use visuals, countdowns, chants or songs to help them remember class rules and structure. (You can never go wrong with a catchy song) Finally, sprinkle in a bit of holiday nostalgia by asking them to share something special they did over the break either at the top of class, at the very end or while changing shoes.
2. Reestablishing Communication with Dance Parents After the Holidays…
Are you teaching in a school system?!? The new year is the perfect time to reset communication with dance parents! Post updated grades and feedback promptly so they know where their child stands. Try to do this in a cadence that the parents and dancers become use to and can expect. Send a detailed email or newsletter outlining key dates for performances, projects, or costume fittings, as well as a consistent communication plan for the semester (where will parents catch the latest updates…email, school portal, printed handouts, certain apps).
3. It’s time to Gear Up for Your High School Students Auditioning for Summer Intensives and College Programs…
Audition season is here, so preparation is key! Remind students to check all application deadlines and requirements, including video submission guidelines. Assist them in selecting clean, polished choreography that highlights their strengths, and offer opportunities for mock auditions to boost their confidence. Make sure recommendation letters are written well in advance and tailored to each program, emphasizing the student's unique qualities and growth potential. (I will elaborate more on this subject later!)
4. Get Back into Your Routine After the Holidays…
Getting back on schedule post-holiday can be TOUGH, but a little planning goes a long way! Start by reviewing your syllabus and lesson plans to ensure they align with upcoming goals and events. Consider reenergizing your space with some new music, props, or decor to inspire both you and your students as you tackle the new semester. And utilize the apps on your phone! Everything from alarms and reminders to ChatGPT…let them be your friend in 2025!
5. Are You Starting New Classes Mid-Year with Brand New Students…
Starting fresh mid-year can be exciting! Begin by setting clear expectations for behavior, attendance, and goals from day one to establish a positive environment. Use icebreakers, questionnaires or simple combinations to assess skill levels and help students feel at ease. Build a sense of community by incorporating group activities and emphasizing teamwork, while ensuring that new students feel supported as they integrate into the studio family. Lastly, establish open communication with parents as soon as possible.
